July 17 - Beach & Wine

What a Tuesday! Beach in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon. After eating breakfast in Solvang, Leah and I drove north on HWY 101 for about 60 miles to check out Avila Beach and Pismo Beach. We walked along the fishing peir in Avila Beach, where we observed commercial fishermen going to work. The weather was a balmy 62 degrees. We then drove about 5 miles south to the town of Pismo Beach. This is a vacation destination for the local farmers of Central California according to our guide books. The water was quite a bit colder than the Florida Atlantic or Gulf. I could only walk ankle deep in the water. Most of the surfers and about half of the recreation beach visitors wore wet suits. We sat on the beach and read for about an hour. After grabbing two beers, a crab melt sandwich and a french dip sandwich at a restaurant off of the beach, we headed for the San Luis Obispo Wine Trail.

Leah and I have both concluded that we will have to re-evaluate how we purchase and consume wine after this trip. The local wine is fantastic! We stopped at four wineries along the trail before heading south back to our version of a Days Inn.

We concluded the evening playing Trivial Pursuit, while eating cheese and enjoying a bottle of Fess Parker Pinot Noir. Our plan on Wednesday is to do laundry in the morning before visiting a few more wineries. We are going to have dinner at a restaurant in Los Olivos. This is the location of the infamous "merlot quote" from the movie Sideways.

Wineries we visited:

Edna Valley Vineyard
Saucelito Canyon Vineyard
Domaine Alfred
Talley Vineyard

Gee, I am going next time! Or at least following your trail. You all need to go into the travel writing business, honestly! Can't wait to hear more about how your wine purchasing decisions will change.

What a place to read and relax. I think you two have enough knowledge to plant the beginnings of a vineyard in Alpine (an option)! Why not? Fess Parker??? We can think of a better name than that! You guys look like the epitome of enjoyment. Another Kittie....that would make seven! I just love this participation in your journey. Thanks. lwc

Dear Children:

What a fun day. We will defer to your judgement on wines from this day forward. Isn't the cool weather a pleasant surprise--we think the entire world suffers like we Texans do in the summer.

Do remember that the kitties you find have a home already. But of course they know that Leah and Wade are safe people and they will enjoy the attention.

Matilda was restless this afternoon until she got in my lap for a long nap. Pooh did not understand the situation. All kitties are very well and content (except Priscilla).

Enjoy every moment of your trip, and thank you for sharing!

Love, Mom

Well, we are in NO way wine experts, just wino experts! Honestly, I don't think we could afford this habit based upon our travel blogging, but thanks for the comment Patricia!

Wade found out today that another article was accepted for publication, so at least his special ed. research can be published.

Mom - hug and kiss King Matilda for me, I miss him.

Love, Leah

SLO is supposed to be a wonderful place. I have no doubt that the french dip sandwhich belonged to Dr. Wickerfish ;-) Be sure when you head to S.D. to stop by La Jolla to see the seals - it is amazing!

Hugs to you both and thank you for sharing!
